The Court Care Center for Divorcing Families functions as an emotional trauma program within the court system that provides brief court-ordered assessments, appropriate referral, and individual crisis  counseling/brief therapy.

To decrease conflict and promote emotional stability among divorcing parents for the benefit of their children and themselves.

What Do We Do?

  • Facilitate voluntary, confidential individual crisis counseling for those experiencing  high conflict divorces

  • Provide needs assessments and referrals for all court-ordered individuals

  • Provide individuals with community resources

Eligibility
In order to receive services from the Court Care Center, you must have a court order from an Orange County Family/Domestic Court Judge.

Assessment Unit

Goal
Provides screening assessment and appropriate referrals for court ordered divorcing parents.

Design
Parents meet individually with counselors for approximately a one-hour interview and also complete additional questionnaires regarding conflict with their former spouse and a questionnaire regarding their children's adjustment and any concerns.

Features    
Individual assessment to receive appropriate recommendations.  Compliance is reported to the referring Judge.

Clientele Criteria
Divorcing parents with children in common (no active domestic violence injunctions, no current substance abuse, no active involvement with the Department of Children and Families).


Crisis Intervention Unit

Goal
To reduce the emotional distress of litigating parents, improve coping skills, and day-to-day functioning.

Focus On The Children

Goal
To reduce current high conflict interactions between parents, limit negative impact of divorce on children, enhance co-parenting skills, reduce court involvement, and improve family functioning.

Clientele Criteria
High conflict post-dissolution parents with multiple court involvement ("high utilizers"), no active domestic violence and/or domestic violence injunctions, substance abuse, or current DCF involvement.


Cooperating for Kids

Goal
Assist parents who have filed for divorce to reduce their conflict , improve their co-parenting communication skills and techniques, and to increase effective negotiation with their child(ren)'s other parent.

Design
Adult component to directly address mild to moderate conflict couples who may be over-utilizing the courts to resolve child and co-parenting issues in the process of divorce; Children's component to assist in identifying feelings, coping and positive expression among children of similar ages.

Features
Court ordered needs assessment; Adult structured learning activities in a group environment with expert facilitators using individual workbooks, exercises, discussion and video; Children participate in structured groups using age appropriate activities and discussion.

Clientele
Parents who have filed for divorced and/or have been divorced and exhibit some degree of conflict between them.  Children in groups are generally ages 5 to 12.  Teen groups are provided if there is sufficient numbers of children to effectively run a group.

Once you receive a court order from your Judge, call the Court Care Center at 407-836-2116 to schedule an appointment for your assessment.  Provided below are available appointment times:

Appointments may range from 1.5 - 2 hours.  Former spouses and children are not permitted to attend the sessions.  To make arrangements for childcare at the courthouse, please call A Place for Children at 407-836-2108.  Please note, however, alternative childcare arrangements are highly recommended.
